Jon Solo Sebastian 06/28/2024:
The Baobhan Sith, pronounced Baa’van see, are Scottish Banshees that sound a lot like vampires, but shapeshift into wolves. I’d be lying if I wasn’t drawn to the name of this particular banshee. The word “Sith” is in there, and even though it isn’t pronounced as it’s spelled, it still pulled my eyeballs into Google mode. Sith, Star Wars, and me… we’re like Jack, Janet, and Chrissy (or Terri) from Three’s Company! So, join me down at the Regal Beagle for some drinks and a little discussion about the Baobhan Sith. Baa’van See also sounds like a name straight out of Star Wars!
The Baobhan Sith are exclusively females and as you might expect, they prey on men. They’re beautiful and they wear long fancy dresses that cover up their goat legs. Yes, I said goat legs. Male hunters are their targets, which in turn makes the banshee-vamps hunters themselves. As I’ve sifted through the very limited folktales about them, I’ve concluded that the legend was likely started to deter hunters from the area.
The Baa’van See Legend
The tale tells of four male hunters who were murdered by the Scottish Banshees. The day started out bright for the men, but an innocent thought becomes a wish come true with a dark and bloody ending.
Four hunters went back to their cabin after a long and fruitful day. They built a fire and bragged about their spoils, and one of them said the only thing that could make the day any better would be if they were in the company of beautiful women. Seconds after the comment, a tap on the door silenced the cabin until one of the men opened the door to see four attractive women standing there. They asked if they could come inside to get warm—another vampire trait is they have to be invited in. Again, they’re not necessarily vampires, but they aren’t too different from them.
They let the women inside, and made room for them around the fire. One of the men was a talented singer, and started singing a song that inspired the women to dance. What seemed like an oddly fortune-filled evening goes dark after that. The singing man was so into his song that he didn’t notice the chill in the air, nor did he see the women slit the throats of his friends and drain them of blood until they turned their attention toward him. Like any smart person, he bolted. They chased him, but they stopped when he got near the horses. Apparently the Baobhan Sith are afraid of horses. They taunted the man hoping he’d charge at them or move just enough to grab him. They tried everything to talk him into moving away from the horses right up until the sun came up before they disappeared. After the singer went back inside to confirm his worst fear—his friends were all dead, he got on his horse and got the heck out of Dodge.

If you’ve been following my articles, you know that I want to believe the creatures or ghosts I write about exist. I’m not sure where I stand with the Baobhan Sith existing. I strongly doubt they’re real, but if they are, I’ll keep my distance. If I’m in a cabin in the woods and someone knocks on the door, I’d probably just let them keep knocking. What do you think, are there goat legged pretty vampire ladies that can change into wolves out there stalking hunters? Have you heard any stories about them? If you have, please share them with me!
