Traditions Held, Traditions Forgotten

Daily writing prompt
What traditions have you not kept that your parents had?

Jon Solo Sebastian 07/28/2025:

I would say this was more of an overall family tradition that no longer exists, rather than it being one my parents started. From before I was born, my family would go to my grandparents house once on a month on Sunday’s for dinner. Now of course, you can imagine this type of thing can become hectic and difficult as children grow up and whatnot. Over time, visits grew further apart, and by the time I was twenty, and my grandmother passed away, we rarely got the larger part of our family together outside of the holidays. By the time I turned thirty, even the holiday get togethers were down to Thanksgiving and Christmas. As my Aunt’s and Uncle’s, and my parents got older, and us children became busier, we hardly ever got together.

The holidays turned into just my parents, siblings and children, and our significant others. We’d occassionally get together for the bigger birthday celebrations on top of all of the holidays, but even that sort of stopped once my dad passed away three years ago. We do the main holidays, but nothing else. I tried to revive the “One Sunday per Month” thing we had done years ago at my grandparents, but it didn’t work out. We did it once, and then everyone always has something going on after that. I’ve attempted to host holiday’s at my house, but some siblings are always unable to make it.

So, I guess the tradition of family importance has not lasted in my family. I tried to keep that as a top priority, but you can’t force anyone to participate. It just seems as family members pass away, the others don’t make the effort to get together, which is sad because time flies, and nothing lasts forever.

I always make time for my family. It’s just sad to see most of them do the opposite.
