Vampire Week Begins with Counting

It’s October, and it’s my favorite month of the year! In Ohio, the weather is always a coin toss, but usually in October, things cool off a bit, and the leaves begin to change colors. The air smells different, and it marks the start of hoodie and beanie weather. Oh, and it just so happens to have one of the best holidays of the year in it—Halloween! I wanted to try something different this year on my page, so starting today (Monday) and finishing up on Friday, I’m going to post a quick piece about some of my favorite vampires!

The first in this series is a little fellow you might remember from your childhood; depending on your age. Welcome the opening of the Week of Vampires hosted by the numerical vampire—Count Von Count!

One, a-ha-ha, two a-ha-ha, three a-ha-ha… I still get a kick out of this guy. You all don’t know this about me, but I suck at math. You would think I would be better at math when you discover The Count was my second favorite Sesame Street character. Who’s my favorite? The little blue guy with the cookie addiction! What makes this friendly neighborhood vampire with a passion for numbers one of my favorite vampires? He’s just this happy little well-dressed vampire with a desire to spread his love for numbers. Rather than being a spooky evil fellow hunting for prey, he chose to use his powers for good, and for teaching. He uses catchy songs and fun games to help children learn how to count and he helps them develop basic skills in math.

He is essentially a parody of Bela Lugosi’s Count Dracula. He has the same hairstyle, and similar accent. When The Count first started appearing on Sesame Street back in 1972, he would enter with his cape covering part of his face, which is how Lugosi did his Dracula.

The Count has a car called the Countmobile. The Countmobile had two different vanity license plates. In the film, Follow That Bird, his plate number was “12345678910.” In a book based on the film titled: Count All the Way to Sesame Street, his plate number was shrunk down to just, “123.”

He has a romantic relationship with The Countess, Natasha Von Numeral.

He co-hosted The Today Show in 1988, with Meryl Sheep—who is like a parody of Meryl Streep.

Every so often, The Count has given up his love for numbers and counting due to a personal conflict, which is kind of sad; especially on a children’s show.

There are many other fun facts about Count Von Count, but we’ve got more vampire’s to discuss this week. I’m about to take the countmobile for a test ride, so until next time, a-ha-ha!!
