My Top Ten Favorite Movies

Daily writing prompt
What are your top ten favorite movies?

What are my top ten favorite movies? I have a solid top 5, but even one or two of those might change from time to time, so here are my top ten favorite movies right now. I’ve been planning on reviewing some of my favorite movies in some upcoming blogs, so I won’t be going into detail with my movie list here. I’m going to start with my number one movie because it has been my solid since the day I went to the theater and witnessed (in my opinion) a masterpiece. Ask my friends how much I love this movie, and they’ll tell you the main character was my Halloween costume go-to for many years.

1. The Crow—starring Brandon Lee. This movie from 1994 is a beautiful and tragic story based on James O’Barr’s comic book titled The Crow from 1989. While the film modified some things from the comic book to make it a film, it was and still is loved by fans of the comic book series just as much as those who haven’t read the series. I could honestly gush about this film all day, but I won’t. Just know that this movie is my number one and it brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. In my opinion, Brandon Lee will always be Eric Draven.

2. Tombstone—A classic Western from 1993. While there are many other Westerns to call classic, you can’t not put Tombstone in the discussion of top Westerns. The cast and acting in the film was top notch. The story, while not entirely historically accurate, was compelling and classic reluctant hero storytelling. I might finish making my list later because I need to go watch this film!

3. Scream. As a fan of horror, I have to say Scream is my top favorite horror film. I remember going to see this in the theater in 1996 and it was just so different from other horror films like Halloween (love those movies) and Friday the 13th, but also carrying along the bits that made those films special. The one character (Randy) basically narrates what happens next in a typical horror movie while it’s happening in this movie to make fun of those other films, but honor them at the same time. It was refreshing and fun; chef’s kiss.

4. Spaceballs—comedy at its best! It’s a parody of Star Wars, though you’ll notice bits from Star Trek and other sci-fi movies from that time, and it was done so well. Mel Brooks received George Lucas’s blessing to make the film; they just weren’t allowed to make any merchandise, which they go on to make fun of in the film. This movie released in 1987 and here we are in 2024 hearing about a sequel being made. I’m interested to see what they’ll do with the sequel, but it has very big shoes to fill.

5. Con Air—“Put the bunny back in the box.” I just re-watched this movie last week for the first time in maybe a year. This is by far my favorite Nicholas Cage movie, though he had a lot of bangers around this time (1997). A bunch of convicts on an airplane; what could go wrong? The answer to that question is simple: everything. Fortunately for the Marshals and society, one of the convicts is a former U.S. Army Ranger set to go home. He got stuck on this plane with some of the worst type of bad guys in the world, but it was a blessing because he saved the day. This is a crazy and fast paced film full of action and an emotional ending.

After my top five, my list gets a little crazy and changes a lot, so for that reason, I’ll just list the last five because they might change by the time I click “post.”

6. Rocky IV – Inspirational

7. The Dark Knight – Heath Ledger as the Joker was 10/10, movie as a whole, 10/10, also

8. The Bourne Identity – The first film in a spy thriller story starring Matt Damon that puts you on the edge of your seat

9. Point Break (Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swazye, not the remake) – Brilliant

10. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith – My comfort film, and favorite Star Wars film

Bonus picks because why not:

11. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation – Comedy gold, I watch it when it’s not Christmas

12. The Lost Boys – I really great Vampire movie with a timeless song attached
