Swamp Thing! The Creature of the Black Lagoon! Charles Mill Lake Monster!
Jon Solo Sebastian 02/02/2025:
Welcome back to my Ohio-based cryptid adventure! This week’s creature feature takes us to a lake near Mansfield, Ohio. You might be familiar with Mansfield, considering it is well known around the world for The Ohio State Reformatory; a place with paranormal activity that I’ll definitely be writing a piece on this year. For this week, we take a swim in Charles Mill Lake… but should we really be taking a dip in these waters? There could be an armless monster lurking about.
The Charles Mill Lake Monster is a legend that dates back to 1959. The first reported sighting was by three teenagers who allegedly encountered a seven foot tall, bipedal, amphibian-like creature with webbed feet and glowing green eyes. The strangest part of their description is that the towering monster had no arms. Perhaps it was in the middle of a battle with King Arthur during his quest for the Holy Grail, and the teenagers disrupted their duel. The teens were said to be approaching the seaweed swamp-like lake when the beast rose from the waters staring at them. It started toward them, and they skinned out of there in a hurry. Police officers investigated the area and found tracks that resembled flippers worn by divers, so they were able to confirm something or someone had been there.
Over time, sightings were reported, but with varying descriptions. Some referred to the monster as being a hairy bigfoot-like creature, while others described it to be more of a serpent-like sea creature. Some sightings made the monster sound like the big brother of the Loveland Frog. My thoughts on the varying descriptions are that the area could just be like one of the many hotspots for cryptids and paranormal activity around the globe. The lake is approximately ten miles away from the Ohio State Reformatory, so it’s possible that folks have seen all these creatures, but they just roll them all into one name.
Left: Ohio State Reformatory. Right: Charles Mill Lake. Potential hotspots for paranormal or interdimensional activity.
A beast known as Orange Eyes is often mistaken to be the Mill Lake Monster. It’s possible, but Orange Eyes, depending on who is describing it, could either be a large hairy Bigfoot with glowing eyes, or an alien with a large head, and glowing eyes. I believe the Mill Lake Monster and Ole Orange Eyes are two different creatures, but there isn’t any concrete evidence on either creature to completely lean one way more than the other. The possibility of the monster being a hoax is pretty high, as well. It could also be misidentifying other animals in the area, though I’m pretty sure seven foot armless animals do not exist.
Check out my piece on Orange Eyes, and let me know what you think as far as them being the same creature goes. If you live near Charles Mill Lake, have you seen the lake monster, or Orange Eyes?
